Fire - Friend or enemy?

 Source: English Language GCE O’ Level 2000 - 2013

Fire  - Friend or enemy?

Fire has been around since creation; in fact, it appears that fire had a hand in itself. Therefore, the man did not discover fire but, apparently, he discovered its use. Before he discovered its use, he was probably at its mercy. Fires started in nature, by lightening or by the sun, must have terrified early man for centuries when he eked out an existence by gathering fruits and nuts to keep body and soul together. Probably he also ate meat raw. Then one day he discovered that this terrifying thing, which burnt and hurt, could be tamed. Then one by one he must have discovered its marvelous uses. Then fire ceased to e an enemy and became a bosom friend of man.

From then on it was a close friendship. Today we can hardly conceive of life without fire. It cooks our food, it provides warmth and it burns rubbish. Fire plays a major part in our lives from birth till we are cremated. The main blessing that this mysterious friend bestows on us is that it cooks our food. Throughout the world, from highly organized societies to primitive tribes, humans need food. Since it has been discovered that food tastes much better when cooked, cooking has evolved over the years so that there are now countless dishes to pamper our palettes. All this is possible only because of fire.

Yet this great friend can be a dangerous enemy. In its natural state fire can break out at any moment - usually through careless handling - and cause devastating harm. Destruction of lives and property by fire is one of the almost, daily disasters in the world. Not even the most developed countries are exempt from this. All anyone can do is take as many precautions as possible but still prepare to fight it when it occurs. Frequently when a fire breaks out, humans are helpless and great losses occur before the fire is brought under control.

On another note, man too uses fire for destructive purposes. Most weapons are based on the principles of fire. This applied to simple devices like handguns, artillery pieces, and nuclear bombs. The main destructive element in weapons or at least the trigger is fire-based. In this case, it is not fire, which is a danger in itself, but rather because it is used for destructive purposes by us.

Hence it is clear that fire is both a bosom friend and a deadly enemy. When kept under control it is one of the greatest boons known to humanity, but when out of control or when used for the destruction it is a devastating force before which man is helpless.

Money is the Root of All Evil

"Money is the Root of All Evil"

Money is the instrument of exchange helping in buying and selling and helps also in fixing the value of things and commodities. It may be in metal and as it now in paper. With the market getting more and more complicated there are other negotiable instruments which are as good as the minted coins or the printed notes. Money in short gives the purchasing power but this power is not absolute as it varies depending on various factors.
Let us see why money is needed. Simply because it helps the possession to buy things. The days of barter are gone though so it is indirectly reported to at the international level. Money can buy men as it does things. Thus money plays an important role in fighting and winning elections. Money mars men and women’s morals. It has got the evil influence in corrupting people; sellout is the new term of bribery. There are people who could do anything for the sake of money. These things are because of what is termed money power. It is true of individuals as well as states that where there is money they could dictate terms. For instance, the Middle-East countries have found new wealth because of their deposits and they have become very powerful. Since money is normally the fruit of labor, coming by money by fair means need not be stunned. The question is how one spends that money. So great thinker have suggested that one who has money enough and to spare must look upon himself as the trustee of that money and see to it that it spent in good ways. As money is only a tool there is nothing good or evil about it. Since the question of evil is a moral factor, man must be strengthened morally so that he may not use money in evil ways.

Terrorism

"Terrorism"

Terrorism is a worldwide phenomenon. It could be defined as the low-intensity warfare against the common man and the State. Terrorism in India has made us believe to coexist with virtuous path during the past decade.
What actually is terrorism-it is the spread of terror, as the name indicates. It could be spread, just by frightening the other, either by loot or killing. Terrorism at home has surpassed the latter variety, someone killing indiscriminately for pride or power. It has taken recourse to slow but sure poisoning of India by a continuous war of nerves, with our neighbour Pakistan exporting the act by training of unemployed infidels.
The objective of terrorism is to make people run out of the territory. Once terror spreads, people run away for cover thereby the perpetrator of the crime achieves the objective. This menace needs to be shelved out in Kashmir with an obvious intent of annexing Kashmir. For, if the caste Hindus flee and the ballot caste, there is no chance for a vote for India.
Terrorists have struck the bait across the state during 1990s, so much so that eighty per cent of Hindu community has fled from the scene to make home elsewhere. Such tragedy made people homeless in their own country. Now, new band of terrorists have spread hatred wings in other parts of the world. It appears the entire world has to work with constant vigil, tooth and nail, against the menace, before the orgy of destruction spree through the length and breathe of the world.
I think terrorism could be wiped off the scene provided the think-tank of the developed and developing world unites for the cause. No country could face the scenario and end this plan of destruction.

Freedom of Press

"Freedom of Press"

The modern man can be said to be molded by the press just as once he was said to have been by his barber and tailor. It means today man’s opinions, may be even his philosophy can be shaped by the papers and magazines he reads. One will no be fair from truth if one were to say one can know a man by the paper he reads. Thus we see the press has become so powerful that it has come to be called the fourth estate.
The democratic system rests upon the assumption that the citizen has access to a wide range of news and views. Only than can be form independent opinion on may important things like the foreign policy of his Government. Ultimately only this can ensure that his vote is based on fair judgment rather than determined by the coercion implicit in being forced to read and hear only the official view point. For instance a good paper may weigh the comparative merits of candidate for an election and thus help the voter.
The paper is so powerful that governments are afraid of paper. Naturally therefore government, given the chance would like to control the paper. They bring forth gagging orders such that the press cannot publish certain things. The press is not allowed to know certain news and thus pressman are prohibited from being present. The news in the paper may be highly censored so that various political parties in a country run their own papers. In England, for instance, there is the labor press as well as liberal press. In communistic countries, the party controls the press, so that no other wind expect that of the party be allowed to blow. The idea behind is quite obvious. Each party wants to propagate and broadcast its views through its paper.
The control of the press by the government through it may be desirable in times of emergency, is not so in normality’s. the control will kill the liberal growth of ideas and people will cases to grow. Just as the free air is desirable to keep the people healthy, today a free press is much important. A free ad fearless press can expose individuals and groups when they err. They may even chastise erring officials and out at the shall owners of certain government action. They may suggest a line of action and put forth proposals in schemes and projects of national importance. In short the free press can act as accelerator sometimes as also a brake sometimes.
